I want to do a little test here at mi casa..  As many of you have heard me ramble for years now, for mysterious reasons my rig takes an abnormally long time doing the pb verification thing at the end of a mapload.

I have two 'similar' P4 rigs here.  Mine is a 3.2Ghz, 2GB DDR2 RAM SATA-II setup, the other (my sons) is a 3.0Ghz, 1GB DDR RAM, SATA-I..
*NOTE - ALl times purley guesstamates, to scale, but not necessarily exact*
Getting both rigs into a game and then having the map change is where it's at.  Mine flies through most of the files, say in 10 seconds.  It than spends over a minute on the verification.  Son's rig takes maybe 30 seconds loading, gets to the verification and it takes MAYBE 20 seconds.  End result, almost always he is in a map BEFORE ME!!  (gasp).

I'm hoping all the files are in the actual game directory, and not in my docs, as I'd then be able to copy the game to a flashdrive, and then reset my flash drive to act as a a folder, specifically the location of my install.  (done it before with other games to see performance gains).  But my gut tells me because of the textures and whatnot that I believe are stored in the my docs BF2 folder, that my idea will not work, well, not unless I used some registry hacker program to move the location of my my docs folder (actually not a bad idea honestly, make it easier on doing system backups on C, without losing all my files, lol).  But that's neither here nor there..

Anyone know if this would work?  What it's checking specifically?

A minute!  Dude you still rock!  Last night, by the time I got into Wake Island, we had already lost four flags!  I run about 2 - 3 minutes myself.  And I thought that was just time built in to go get coffee!

On another note though, I was kicked by PB last night for " . . . losing packets."  Now I know I'm a lousy player, but I do take pride in my bullet seeking/stopping prowess.  I ain't never lost no packet thingy!   I mean, I play support to help others who lose their packet thingys.     So, besides a PB kick, what does it mean to "lose packets" and how do you find 'em when their lost?  or better yet, keep from losing them to begin with?

Well.........  ( I was told) PB recently made a serious overhaul to their entire system.  This has been causing all sorts of problems for EVERY PB-enabled game.  Random PB kicks (like you described) as well as failure to connect on a 1st try to any given server, every time, is another.  Now I was also told they did release another patch which *MIGHT* fix this.  Google yourself a little app called PBSetup (linkage: http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php) and run it maybe even twice, lol, to get up to date files for PB..  Might fix the problem, if not, will hopefully make it occur less??

Wow though - Amazed to hear I'm not the only one..  I really thought for the longest time that the verification took so long because it was verifying my credientals (rank/unlocks/etc).  I have noticed the higher in rank I progressed, the slower my account login is.  But then awhile back I did in fact log in on his machine, and while account login took forever there as well, I was right in and playing just as he is..

Gonne give it a try tongiht for kicks and see what happens with moving the gaming folder.  After that, I'll decide if I wanna try the reg. hacks to alter that.. Would be superslick if there was a script file in bf2 you could edit to set that location, rofl.  But that's what we, as gamers get when we ask for installs to be easier, cleaner..  We get all our saves for games in one area (my docs) for compliant applications, and it becomes a nightmare to alter from that, lol..

A few minutes to load a map???  What do you mean when you say "flash drive"?  I am picturing either a USB stick drive or a HD in a trenchcoat....

Questions..have you:

Ran ScanDisk

Ran Defrag

Checked event logs for errors

Scanned for spyware/virus

Deleted your BF2 cache and "optimized shaders" again

I haven't paid attention enough to know when PB is doing its thing...but if you know its PB could you sniff the network traffic using Ethereal while you load the map and send me the output (david@douglas-home.com)?  We can take a look at what its doing over the wire.

No reg hacks involved in moving your mydocs rooster, you just move it and windows keeps up.

I was having a really long time just connecting to the EA server. I am quite sure it was because I had some weird account on the computer. It actually did it even when I installed BF2 on Vista anew, and then copied the account dir. It started all over again. I couldnt delete the account in BF2, so I just manually deleted the directory. It went away and my connect time to EA went from over a minute to under 15 seconds.

My maps load up pretty fast actually, and PB verification isnt that long anyway. Although, with this new vid card, it seems to take less time to load up.

I should be getting my CPU tomorrow (and hence new computer build), so these load times should diminish dramatically.

:)
